Noncancer Oral Synopsis:

RIVM has evaluated the noncancer oral toxicity data for ferric ferrocyanide (cyanide, complex) and derived a tolerable daily intake (TDI) of 0.8 mg/kg-day, which was derived from the TDI for free cyanide (0.05 mg/kg-day). See the ITER file on cyanide for more information on the derivation of its TDI. RIVM notes that ferric ferrocyanide (cyanide, complex) is very poorly absorbed in the gastro-intestinal tract as compared to free cyanide, and that the toxicity of ferric ferrocyanide is further limited due to limited release of free cyanide from the absorbed complex cyanide. Therefore, RIVM calculated the ferric ferrocyanide TDI by multiplying the TDI for free cyanide by the ratio between the absorption percentage for free cyanide (50\% shown in a limited study in rats) and that for ferric ferrocyanide (less than or equal to 3\% shown in rat and human experiments). This calculation (50ug/kgbw x (50\%/3\%)), results in a TDI of 800 ug/kg-day (0.8 mg/kg-day).
